Tips

What to Wear for Family Photos (Without Overthinking It!)

Filed in: Tips

Let’s talk about one of the biggest questions that comes up before a photo session. What in the world is everyone going to wear?!

If you’ve ever stood in front of your closet trying to figure out what to wear for photos, you’re definitely not alone! Between finding something you love, coordinating outfits, and second guessing every decision along the way, it can feel like a lot!

But here’s the good news! Choosing outfits for photos doesn’t have to be stressful. A little planning goes a long way, and I’m sharing a few of my favorite tips to help make the process easier!

1. Coordinate, Don’t Match!

Remember when everyone wore matching white shirts and blue jeans for family photos? While matching outfits can be cute, I personally love when everyone coordinates colors without wearing the exact same thing.

Soft neutrals, earthy tones, and muted colors are some of my favorites, especially when photographing outdoors in natural light.

The goal is to create a look that feels pulled together while still letting everyone’s personality shine through.

2. Start With an Outfit You Love!

Not sure where to begin? Start with an outfit you absolutely love!

If you’re planning outfits for the whole family, I always recommend that moms choose theirs first. We’re usually so busy making sure everyone else looks good that we end up throwing something together for ourselves at the last minute

Choose something that makes you feel beautiful, comfortable, and confident. Once you’ve found an outfit you love, coordinating everyone else becomes so much easier.

And trust me, when you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in your photos!

3. Keep It Simple and Comfortable

You don’t need elaborate outfits to create beautiful photos. Sometimes, keeping things simple makes the biggest difference!

Choose clothing that fits comfortably and allows you to move naturally, especially if little ones are joining the session and would much rather explore than sit still.

And don’t be afraid to show a little personality! Your outfits should feel like you, just a little more put together for the occasion.

4. Don’t Overthink It!

At the end of the day, your photos are about so much more than what you’re wearing.

Years from now, you won’t be thinking about whether everyone’s outfits were perfectly coordinated. You’ll be looking back at the smiles, little personalities, genuine connections, and memories you made together.

So don’t let the stress of choosing outfits take away from the excitement of your session. A little preparation is helpful, but there’s no need to make everything perfect!

Need a Little Help? I’ve Got You!

If you’re still wondering what to wear, don’t worry! You won’t have to figure it all out on your own.

When you book a session with me, I’ll send over my client experience guide with plenty of helpful tips and outfit inspiration to make planning a little easier. And if you need a second opinion on something, I’m always happy to help!

I want you to feel prepared and excited for your session, not stressed about what you’re wearing.

I can’t wait to capture some beautiful memories with you!
